The 2nd #PreventEpidemicsNaija Journalism Fellowship

Nigeria Health Watch is thrilled to announce the recipients of the 2nd #PreventEpidemicsNaija Journalism Fellowship. The goal of this fellowship is to raise the profile of epidemic preparedness and generate support for robust epidemic preparedness funding by building the capacity of selected journalists to develop in-depth solutions journalism projects on epidemic preparedness with a focus on funding epidemic preparedness in Nigeria.

From August 24, 2020, the following individuals will have the opportunity to help raise the profile of epidemic preparedness in Nigeria as they develop projects that address Nigeria’s readiness challenge through their reporting:

Risikat Ramoni works with Media trust Limited, the publishers of Daily Trust newspaper. She is passionate about data journalism and data mining. As a reporter with Daily Trust Newspaper, she writes Health, Agriculture and Sports stories. Risikat has a B.A in Mass communication and a diploma in Public Relations from the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations

Femi D. Amele is a multi-award-winning broadcast journalist and the host of Morning Crossfire on Nigeria Info FM Abuja. His journalism experience spans 10 years in Print, Radio, TV and new media journalism. He has worked in different areas of journalism including Science & Public health reporting, environment & climate change and population & current affairs. Femi received an Honorary Doctorate in Conflict Management and Development from YELI International in 2019 and is listed among the top 100 most influential media personalities for 2020 by YNaija.

Adam Alqali is an international award-winning journalist and editor of African Newspage, a Pan-African digital newsmagazine focused exclusively on reporting Africa’s development. He has 10 years’ experience working as a journalist and media/communication consultant, including extensive experience covering public health issues.  He was one of only 15 international journalists selected by the Government of South Africa to cover the 4th Science Forum South Africa. He is a winner of the 2018 West Africa Media Excellence and Conference Awards (WAMECA) and the 2017 International Travel Fellowship of the 10th World Conference of Science Journalists.

The winners represent a cross-section of journalism experience, ranging from print and broadcast journalism. The fellows will receive funds to cover out-of-pocket reporting costs. They will also receive extensive editorial feedback, research resources, and journalism mentoring.

Nigeria Health Watch is currently implementing a project that is targeted at preventing epidemics through public awareness and advocacy for sustained funding to improve epidemic preparedness in Nigeria. The overall goal of the project is to build and demonstrate public and policymaker awareness and demand for epidemic preparedness funding increases at the federal and possibly priority state levels
