It can cause confusion, sow mistrust, harm people’s health, and undermine public health efforts as evidenced during the COVID-19 pandemic that health misinformation led people to decline vaccines, reject public health measures, and use unproven treatments as seen during the Ebola disease outbreak in 2014.
