New support and guidance available to health procurement professionals in the public sector in Nigeria

NIGERIA / AGILITYPR.NEWS / September 16, 2020 /
New support and guidance available to health procurement professionals in the public sector in Nigeria to improve health and wellbeing of citizens as global pandemic strains healthcare supply chains.

A free to join network of procurement professionals supported by the largest global professional body for procurement and supply management, The Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS) is providing support in tackling the key challenges in public healthcare procurement in Nigeria and across many African countries.

Health Procurement Africa (HPA) is a knowledge hub created for healthcare and supply chain professionals, and organisations across the Africa region supported by The Chartered institute of Procurement & Supply, and offering a network of professional advice and guidance.

The hub is designed to provide knowledge and skills to healthcare professionals so they can play lead roles in tackling the key challenges Nigeria faces in its healthcare system. This includes procurement of medicines and medical devices, the impact of disrupted supply chains and how to develop strong procurement structures and improve skills and capacity amongst buyers. All these issues interrupt the smooth delivery of medical supplies, and endanger the health of the nation.0

A member of the HPA hub, Pharm. Christoper Sofore, Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Adamawa State Ministry of Health in Nigeria, said, “Knowledge received from the hub and meeting other professionals from other African countries has motivated me greatly.
“I am encouraged that our concerns and worries are also expressed in other countries. Therefore working together to proffer solutions is our next step. Bringing ethical issues into discourse will greatly enhance delivery of services. With great decrease in the resources available for procurement of health commodities and other competing needs there’s need to give honest consideration to doing things in an appropriate manner.
“Thanks HPA for this great opportunity.”

HPA Community Manager, Chukwudi Uche said of the Health Procurement Africa hub, “This is a great project, bringing professionals together from within the healthcare sector in Nigeria and other African countries, who want to procure better; improving quality, availability, price, and speed of delivery of healthcare products and medicines to end users.

“There are hundreds of professionals already involved in the discussions towards tackling the serious issues facing our country today and affecting the health of our citizens.”

CIPS has provided a number of resources such as podcasts, videos, articles and knowledge papers, to support particularly public healthcare sector procurement professionals to build on their current expertise to get the right balance between quality, cost and value when sourcing medical supplies.  The discussion forums within the hub offer professionals an arena to ask difficult questions and get advice from other professionals tackling similar issues to ensure millions of Africans across the continent gain access to improved healthcare. Being part of the community, professionals and anyone with a responsibility for buying can connect directly to each other, discuss opportunities and share advice and gain access to exclusive events.
